9 · Termination
Status: ✅ Runs today
Goal: stop the reflections from lesson 8.
Reuse the line from lesson 8 and change only the resistors.
Build
09-series-term.circuit.tsx
import Line from "./08-tline.circuit"
// Series termination: the source resistance matches Z0
export default () => <Line sourceR="50" />
09-parallel-term.circuit.tsx
import Line from "./08-tline.circuit"
// Parallel termination: 50 Ω to ground at the receiver
export default () => <Line sourceR="10" loadR="50" />
Run
bunx tsci simulate 09-series-term.circuit.tsx
bunx tsci simulate 09-parallel-term.circuit.tsx
What you see
| V_TX at launch | V_RX after the edge arrives | V_RX at 4 ns | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open, 10 Ω (lesson 8) | 0.833 V | 1.82 V, rings | 1.19 V |
| Series 50 Ω | 0.496 V | 1.12 V, then settles | 1.00 V |
| Parallel 50 Ω | 0.833 V | 0.95 V, then settles | 0.83 V |
Check by hand
- Series: the source launches half the step, 1 × 50/(50 + 50) = 0.5 V ✓. The open far end doubles it to the full 1.0 V ✓. The reflection returns to a matched 50 Ω source, so it stops there.
- Parallel: the far end matches Z0, so Γ = 0 and nothing reflects. V_RX = 1 × 50/60 = 0.833 V ✓
- The trade-off: series termination draws no DC current, but the waveform is only half amplitude along the line. Parallel termination gives a clean waveform everywhere, but it burns V²/50 Ω.
Try this
Try a series resistor of 33 Ω, or a parallel resistor of 100 Ω. Predict Γ first, then check the sim.
